The size of the oilseed rape canopy is a critical indicator for several management decisions. However it is difficult for growers to estimate the GAI (Green Area Index) using traditional visual methods. The following tool has been developed to provide a more accessible and consistent method for estimating GAI.

To gain the most accurate results from the tool; digital photographs should be taken from directly above the crop. The area of crop photographed is not critical and a 1m x 1m area is more than adequate. It is advisable to avoid taking photographs on sunny days as this causes shadows.

Simply select your photo of the crop using the browse function below. Click on submit and the GAI will be displayed below. (Note: Two images will appear below the original photo and the GAI scan. Images are not saved on this website.). Currently this tool is only compatible with JPEG (.jpeg, .jpg) images.
