Optimising Oilseed Rape Crop Management

Autumn Weed Control - The Importance of Autumn Inputs

Once established, the yield potential for oilseed rape must be protected from competition of weeds, damage by pests and diseases. Growers should aim to produce a healthy crop with a strong root system and with a good canopy that has closed by the time the winter sets in.

Successful weed control

Weeds compete with the oilseed rape in the autumn when the crops itself is at its least competitive. Incorporated straw can slow down establishment and lead to a crop less able to compete. Also, lower seed rates that are now being used for canopy management will results in less competitive crops. Later sown crops also tend to be more susceptible to weed competition.

Weeds in oilseed rape must be controlled because:

  1. Essential for good establishment
  2. Cause yield losses
  3. Rotational control – reduce the seed burden
  4. Weeds harbour pests and diseases
  5. Admixture penalties
  6. They can increase combining and desiccation costs
