Published Date: Thursday 22nd March 2007
The Sclerotinia germination monitoring service for oilseed rape went live on Friday, 22nd March on the www.totaloilseedcare.co.uk web site. Growers and advisors can log onto the web site for the next twelve weeks in order to track sclerotia germination in their area, to assess disease risk and then decide on the need for fungicide treatment, advises BASF.
Put down roots in oil seed rape (124.42 KB)
Published Date: Tuesday 20th March 2007
Root density in an oilseed rape crop has been shown to be linked to its final yield, and the use of the triazole fungicide Caramba in the spring has been shown to have a positive and unique effect on both rooting and crop yields, according to a three year project on optimising winter oilseed rape root systems carried out by ADAS.
Lodging risk needs managingin rape (123.39 KB)
Published Date: Thursday 08th March 2007
Winter cereal crops are facing significant lodging risk this season, thanks to early, good crop establishment and a mild winter. But so too is the winter oilseed rape crop. Timely application of the growth regulating fungicide Caramba to tall leggy crops at risk from lodging can minimize any adverse effects and yield loss, advises BASF.
Using GAIs for canopy managemnt (124.42 KB)
Published Date: Monday 26th February 2007
Right up until last year the concept of using Green Area Index (GAI) to manage nitrogen and growth regulation in winter oilseed rape was more talked about than actioned, but this year it has caught the imagination of many growers who are incorporating it into their management activities. Many growers are taking up the new web-based GAI tool developed by ADAS and BASF as a key part of this management and are finding it to be a handy and useful tool which is very easy to use, says Robert Plaice, UK Oilseed Technical Specialist, Monsanto.
Accurate Canopy Management (122.88 KB)
Published Date: Saturday 03rd February 2007
A new sophisticated web-based tool to help oilseed rape growers accurately assess the need for nitrogen and growth regulation and hence manage their oilseed canopy more effectively has been launched by BASF and ADAS. The Canopy GAI tool can be found on www.totaloilseedcare.co.uk web site and is available free to farmers and advisors.
Don’t Put Sprayers Away Yet (123.90 KB)
Published Date: Wednesday 22nd November 2006
Oilseed rape growers are being urged not to put their sprayers away yet, as there is still work to do to control Phoma and other diseases, according to the plant pathologist, Dr. Peter Gladders of ADAS Boxworth.
Managing winter oilseed crops (123.90 KB)
Published Date: Tuesday 24th October 2006
Yields of winter oilseed rape in Scotland this year appeared to be higher than in England and one contributing factor to this success could be due to the inclusion of the fungicide and growth regulator, Sunorg Pro (metconazole) into the management programme, according to Derek Robertson of Agrovista, South West Scotland.
Time to get on with Phoma control (123.39 KB)
Published Date: Tuesday 24th October 2006
This year Phoma has been detected unusually early and is now at high levels in winter oilseed rape. A two-spray programme with both treatments being applied before Christmas will be required in many crops, according to the plant pathologist, Dr. Peter Gladders of ADAS Boxworth.
Double Benefit from Caramba this Autumn (120.83 KB)
Published Date: Friday 29th September 2006
Managing diseases as well as managing the plant structure this autumn will have a significant influence on the ultimate yield potential of winter oilseed rape crops, but not all products are able to offer the double benefit that Caramba or Sunorg Pro can offer, says BASF.
Variety Choice in Oilseed Rape (119.81 KB)
Published Date: Thursday 07th September 2006
Over 44% of growers will be changing the oilseed rape variety they grow this autumn, with the two key reasons for change being yield (83% of responses) and disease resistance (52% of responses), according to a recent survey conducted on behalf of BASF.
Optimism for future rape yields (117.25 KB)
Published Date: Wednesday 06th September 2006
Oilseed rape growers are optimistic about the rape yields that they can achieve, according to a recent survey of growers conducted on behalf of BASF. But they need to adopt a more technical and professional approach to the management of this crop, if these higher yield aspirations are to be achieved.

Well sown is well grown (120.32 KB)
Published Date: Tuesday 11th July 2006
Winter oilseed rape can only reach its potential if the crop is well established.
