Rape yield depends on good light penetration through the whole pod layer after flowering and good rooting at depth for water in May/June. To achieve open canopies the optimum plant population should be 25-30 plants/m2 . Most populations are thicker than this - it is easier to manage the canopy in the spring than risk losing all the crop to slugs in the autumn!
